Needleman Subject: MedLine via MacTCP on the Internet Many universities have site licenses for MedLine--but require access through an IBM LAN only, with Mac software permitting that access through the university LAN currently unavailable. Although you can get an individual license and access the library through telnet, the slick access through proper search software has been unavailable--and individuals were not allowed to use their university site licenses to access as individuals, making the cost of an account prohibitive for most individual users. Here's an announcement showing that is going to change, hopefully soon. It was forwarded to me by Edward Vielmetti ; thanks, Ed! ** INTERNET LITERATURE SEARCHING ** Grateful Med 2.0 (Macintosh Please note that "Internet access" means access from a LAN connected to Internet using only selected FTP software and configurations. See below - ----------------------------Original message---------------------------- Grateful Med 2.0 (Macintosh) 11/12/92 8:52 AM This message is being sent to anyone who has ever written to gmhelp@gmedserv.nlm.nih.gov, the Grateful Med help address. In January, 1992, the National Library of Medicine introduced Internet communications in Grateful Med Version 6.0 for the IBM. At that time, we received numerous inquiries from Macintosh users. We are happy to announce that Internet access will soon be available for Macintosh Version 2.0. If you have always wanted a Macintosh version that included access through the Internet, please keep reading... The National Library of Medicine plans to begin Beta testing of the next Macintosh version of Grateful Med in the coming weeks. If you are interested in Beta testing, now is the time to get in touch with NLM. In order to be a Beta tester, you need two things: *time to explore new features *time to report back on your experiences. Although experience with Grateful Med is useful, we welcome both novice and expert users. The most important factor is the ability to spend time with the program and the ability to provide details on your experiences. If you think Beta testing is for you, send an e-mail message to gmhelp@gmedserv.nlm.nih.gov. Please include: daytime phone number, details about your Macintosh system (e.g., Mac IIci, 8 MB RAM, 80 MB hard disk, System 6.0.7, etc...), and a brief description of your Grateful Med and MEDLINE experience. In case you're interested, some of the new features for Version 2.0 include: * Document ordering (Loansome Doc) * Redesigned results display * New MeSH window including More Specific Terms display * Redesigned communications setup to include access to the NLM computer through the Internet (requires MacTCP) * Redesigned help display If you are interested, please respond as soon as possible. There may be a limit on the number of participants. Catherine Soehner MEDLARS Management Section gmhelp@gmedserv.nlm.nih.gov DFPs NOTE: If you try to TELNET to MEDLARS.NLM.NIH.GOV you get to an opening screen but no further unless one knows a special command language. Sadly, MEDLINE is not subscribable via modem or by direct use of Internet. The Grateful Med software has built in the option to connect from a LAN using Wollongong, PC/TCP or NCSA software. The config.tel file has been preconfigured. I was unable to connect using Clarkson public domain NFS on our Ethernet/Internet network. Don "David W. Wormuth - MD" RE: Grateful Med 2.0 (Macintosh Medline is in fact reachable by TELNET, the IP address is 130.14.10.200 You will need an account, which you can get by calling 800-638-8480. David W.
